Enviro-Mentors

A Brief History

Current Projects

In September 2008, The Ecology Centre’s Enviro-Mentors project featured in the BBC’s Big Lottery Primetime programme. As one of three finalists in the Central Scotland and Fife area, Enviro-Mentors went on to win the public vote and secure funding for the project for the next five years.

What is the Enviro-Mentors Project about?

The Enviro-Mentors project is aimed at people who are 50 and over who would like to volunteer at The Ecology Centre. There will be many opportunities to try new activities, develop skills and knowledge, socialise with others and improve general health and well being.

We are looking for volunteers from all backgrounds and hope to provide activities to suit everyone.

What Type of projects are on offer?

We have a variety of projects that people can get involved in including:

  • Gardening - there are several smaller formal areas of garden and also larger areas that could be used to plant and harvest crops.
  • Conservation - of the woodland and wetland associated with the large 20 acre site.
  • Wildlife - there is a wide and varied habitat on the site and as a result there is a lot of wildlife, if you would like to learn more about our local animals, birds and insects there is no better place to come
  • DIY - being such a large site with a variety of buildings and outside works, there is a constant need to improve the centre and maintain what is already there.  We are also looking at some development projects that could use building skills or indeed provide a development opportunity for new skills.
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Business Skills

Inspiring Others!

Another important aspect of the project is to provide “Mentoring” opportunities at the centre. This will involve the over 50 volunteers working closely with a young person between the ages of 16 to 25 either on a specific project or simply on the site. This exchange of skills and experience through advice and guidance, will be a very rewarding aspect of the project for both parties involved. Not all Enviro-Mentors will want to get involved in the Mentoring side of the project and that is fine. For those who do, training will be provided and a certificate issued.

Where does it happen?

The project takes place in the inspiring grounds of The Ecology Centre by Kinghorn Loch.

How much time will Enviro-Mentor volunteers need to give?

This is up to the individual to decide how much time they can spare. We will welcome volunteers for a few hours or a few days each week.

What are the benefits of becoming an Enviro-Mentor?

  • Improved health and fitness….get out in the fresh air, be active, grow your own food.
  • Socialise…meet new people and make new friends through sharing activities.
  • Helping your community…by improving a community resource and by using what you have learned in your own community.
  • Learn new skills…there are many learning opportunities at the Centre and training will be available.
