The Ecology Centre is a community based charity established as a non-profit making organisation in August 1998.
In 1998 the organisation was set up as Craigencalt Farm Ecology Centre and has since evolved into The Ecology Centre .
Previously Craigencalt Farm, who own the buildings and some of the site the Centre operates from, had created the first areas of Community Woodland, a Workshop programme and an Organic Garden on the banks of Kinghorn Loch.
The organisation came into being through an advisory group. The group consisted of people from the local community and residents of the farm. It was set up to develop and manage the amenity for community use. At this point, the first volunteer was taken on board to help establish the organisation. In 1998, the volunteer became the first member of our paid staff.
As demand for our services increased, many volunteers joined us, including several New Deal clients who, along with their supervisor, became the working backbone of the site. Today, our Operations Coordinator supervises volunteers and looks after the range of habitats on the site.
Demand for educational visits and use of the site has grown year on year.
The Ecology Centre now offers a range of services including Environmental Education, Training and Volunteering Opportunities.
In 2006 The Ecology Centre Enterprise was established as the trading arm of the charity. The Out of the Wood workshop produces individual, hand crafted, high quality and good value wooden products. All the profits raised from the sale of these goods is fed back into The Ecology Centre
