Restoration Forth seagrass seeding - Pettycur Bay, Burntisland

This March marks the start of seagrass restoration in the Firth of Forth. Together with local community volunteers Restoration Forth will seed the first seagrass seeds on Pettycur Bay. Attendees can seek to gain practical skills in active restoration, as well as enhancing their understanding of these valuable coastal habitats.

The plan:

Participants will meet members of the Restoration Forth team in the Burntisland Leisure Centre car park at 08:10am. A short safety briefing will take place before you meet the team at the trail site for instructions on the seeding protocol. Together volunteers and project team will walk out to the seagrass restoration site and after another instruction we’ll inject seagrass seeds into the seabed using the dispenser injection seeding technique. Once seeding is completed, participants will be invited to come back to the Ecology Centre for warm drinks and cake.

What to bring

Please ensure that you bring warm, waterproof clothing appropriate for the weather outside, a drink, and any medication you may need. As we will be conducting our seeding trials at low tide, there may be tidal pools, so please come with wellies to avoid wet feet.

Accessibility

We anticipate the activity to last approximately 4 hours. There will be no cover when on the beach, no available seating and no toilets. Toilet facilities can be found at Burntisland park from 08:30am onwards and from 11am at Burntisland Leisure Centre.

We will be on the move during this task, and the route includes some gentle slopes, uneven sand, rocky ground, and slippery surfaces.

Keeping everyone safe

Our group leader is a trained first aider and will be carrying a first aid kit and mobile phone.

Ticket Information

Attendees will be expected to register for this event and provide ticket evidence on the day. Please note, only existing local community volunteers will be admitted to attend this event. 

What if my event is cancelled?

If this event is cancelled due to poor weather conditions, we will get in touch with you the day before to let you know. On rare occasions, we may be in touch on the day of the task (if there is a change in the forecast). Please keep an eye on your emails prior to the event.

Who we are:

Restoration Forth (a multi-partnership project, which aims to restore seagrass and oysters in the Forth) along with other actors in the marine conservation field, are seeking to recover UK seagrass meadows through active restoration.

March is Seagrass Awareness Month, which sets out to recognise the importance of this humble marine plant. Seagrasses are part of a healthy and biodiverse seascape and provide a range of services that benefit humankind and the wider marine ecosystem. Worryingly, UK’s seagrass meadows a steep decline in its seagrass extent in the last century.
