About the event

The Ecology Centre has recently developed a snorkel trail for the South Fife region, in order to showcase the incredible marine diversity that is found in this part of Fife. Our snorkel trail consists of six sites that are spread out along the coastal zone between Kinghorn and Kirkcaldy. The trail has been designed to accommodate snorkellers of all abilities, with sites ranging in their difficulty and accessibility. By creating this trail, the Ecology Centre endeavours to inspire residents from Fife to explore their marine environment by accessing these designated areas. This self-led trail will be part of the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s snorkel trail network, which is putting Scotland’s best snorkelling locations on the map.

To celebrate this occasion, the Ecology Centre in collaboration with the Scottish Wildlife Trust and partners from the Restoration Forth project, are hosting a day of outdoor activities along at Ravenscraig Beach, on Saturday the 26th of August. Each of the attending organisations will either host a craft or outdoor activity, with each session related to the marine and coastal environment. Moreover, there will be the chance to learn more about these incredible organisations and the work they do by visiting one of the pop-up stalls, that day. The craft and outdoor activities are designed to attract people of all age groups, so feel free to sign up to any and all of the activities that day.

The sessions that day include:

· Grow your own seagrass meadow (12:00 - 1500),

· Cetacean watch (12:00 - 15:00),

· Shell ID guide session and shoreline exploration (13:00 - 14:00), &

· Wildflower and coastal walk (14:00 - 14:45).

To finish off the day, we will be launching the snorkel trail. We have partnered up with Genine, from Snorkel Wild, for this section of the day. Genine is an experienced snorkel guide, who has been running discovery and guided snorkel sessions down in Berwickshire, for the past two years. By partnering with Genine, we can offer six people a memorable underwater adventure. By signing up to this session, you will be inducted in how to properly use your snorkelling equipment and how to communicate when in the water, before taking to the waters around Ravenscraig beach for a snorkel. The snorkel session will run for approximately 1 hour, however this may be longer or shorter depending on the conditions that day. All snorkelling equipment will be provided on the day.

There are a limited number of places for the snorkel session, so please fill in our survey form to register your interest in the snorkel session. Register your interest here. The snorkel session will run from 15:00 - 16:00, however, we ask those of you who are selected to attend this session to arrive no later than 13:45, to ensure we can get you kitted up and down to the shore for 15:00.

This event will be held at Ravenscraig beach, which is an outdoor location. So, please come dressed appropriately for the weather conditions that day.

Travel information: Ravenscraig beach has two car parking locations: Pathead Sands beach car park and Ravenscraig Park car park. For those of you who will be taking public transport, there are a number of buses which run from Kirkcaldy bus station to Ravenscraig park.

This event is free to attend, however if you are interested in making a donation you can on the day. The money you donate will support the ongoing work at the Ecology Centre.
